The Lehigh Seal

The seal shown at the left was for many decades the only official seal of Lehigh University. The Latin quote around the edge was from Francis Bacon's “Novum Organum” and means “Man, the servant and interpreter of nature”; the symbols in the center represented the Trinity. In recent years the seal has been largely replaced by a more “modern” version and its symbolism has been reinterpreted.

LCA would like to educate Lehigh Alumni and other members of the Lehigh community on the original meaning of the seal by posting documents on this web site.

Our first document is an excerpt from the 1865 Board of Trustees meeting where the original seal was adopted. Click Here

The second is “A Tale of Two Seals”, an essay written by LCA President, Rev. Richard H. Earl, '80.
